The 3,400-Year-Old Wig Foundation: What Ancient Egyptian Construction Teaches Us About Scalp Protection

3,400 years ago, a wigmaker in Thebes solved a scalp protection problem we are still engineering around today.
British Museum EA2560 is one of the most intact wigs ever recovered from ancient Egypt. It came from the west bank of Thebes and dates to roughly 1400 BC. It was found in its original box.
When a professional wigmaker examined it in 1975, the finding was that the construction standard matched a good modern wig.
Here is what they built.
The foundation was a mesh. Lengths of plaited human hair were laid horizontally and vertically across a wooden mount, then knotted or folded back on themselves to lock the grid. The mount itself closely resembled the blocks we work on now.
That mesh was set with a mixture of two thirds beeswax and one third imported conifer resin, warmed on application and hardened as it cooled. Beeswax melts between 60 and 65 degrees Celsius, which meant the foundation held under desert heat.
Hair was cleaned and divided into several hundred lengths of roughly 400 strands each. To attach a length, the wigmaker looped an inch of the root end around the horizontal mesh, pressed it into the waxed stem, then wound a sub-strand of about 15 hairs around the base to secure it.
That is a knotting logic, executed by hand, thousands of years before ventilation was formalized as a craft.
The finished piece weighed between half a kilogram and one kilogram. A modern reconstruction took a trained wigmaker roughly 200 hours.
Now the part that matters clinically.

These wigs were not only ornamental. The head underneath was shaved or cropped, and the wig shielded exposed scalp from direct sun. The open mesh base let body heat escape, which a wrapped headscarf does not do. Because the unit was removable, the scalp could be cleaned and the risk of head lice dropped, since lice depend on proximity to the scalp's blood supply to feed.
Breathable foundation. Low weight. Full scalp coverage. Removable for hygiene.
Those are the same four requirements we write into a cranial prosthesis specification today for a patient in chemotherapy or living with alopecia.
Hair itself was valuable enough to appear alongside gold and incense in ancient account lists. Wigmaking operated out of dedicated workshops, including inside temple complexes at Deir el-Bahari.
We did not invent the science. We inherited it, and our obligation is to keep advancing it with the materials and clinical evidence available now.
